Hunting camp porta potty: will animals chew on the plastic or vents?

Luis A.asked 3 viewsHome Renovations & Long-termLong term rentalPlacementStakingWildlife damageStandard unit

Setting up a hunting camp for the fall season and need a portable toilet for about six guys over a month. We're in bear country, and I've seen rodents chew through just about anything. The unit will be a standard portable toilet placed on uneven ground, and the service truck has to drive about 40 miles to reach us every two weeks. I'm worried about animals damaging the plastic shell or the vent stack. Are there reinforced models or specific features that hold up better against wildlife? What should I look for in the rental agreement to cover potential damage from bears or rodents?

Animals rarely chew the shell itself. What draws them is smell, and the weak spots are the vent stack, the gap under the door, and anything soft like a toilet paper roll left on the floor.

We ran a standard unit at a remote site in bear country for a season. The plastic held up fine. What got hit was the vent cap, which a bear swatted off once, and the paper, which mice shredded every week. A few things that helped:

  • Stake or strap the unit down. On uneven ground a curious bear can push a top heavy unit over, and that is the real damage risk.
  • Keep the door latched and the spare paper in a sealed bin in a truck, not in the unit.
  • Keep food scraps and trash out of the tank. That is what makes it smell like dinner.
  • Ask for an extra service visit if the tank gets ripe between the two week runs.

For the agreement, ask in writing whether wildlife or tip over damage counts as customer damage and whether they offer a damage waiver. Take photos of the unit the day it lands.
