High-rise build: Servicing a unit when the elevator is out.

We've got a 24-story commercial build downtown. The crew is about 60 people working eight-hour shifts. We have a standard portable toilet and an ADA-compliant portable toilet on the 12th floor slab. The elevator is scheduled for a full day of maintenance next week, and it will be out of service. The service truck can't get to the 12th floor, and I can't have my guys carrying a full 300-pound holding tank down twelve flights of stairs. The rental company's vacuum truck needs access. What's the standard procedure here? Do we just skip the service for that week, or is there a way to plan for this?

You must not skip the weekly service for a standard portable toilet or ADA-compliant portable toilet during elevator maintenance. A full holding tank is a health hazard and violates OSHA sanitation standards for your 60-person crew, which requires two units under OSHA 1926.51. Contact your rental company immediately to reschedule the service for a day when the elevator is operational. Most companies will accommodate this without a missed service fee if you give advance notice. If the maintenance is unexpected and the units are at capacity, the only safe option is to have the rental company deliver a temporary unit at ground level for the day. The vacuum truck requires direct access; there is no practical way to service a unit on the 12th floor without elevator access. Always coordinate elevator outages with your service provider to avoid this problem.
