2026 New Year's Eve party: how many porta potties for 250 guests?

We're hosting a New Year's Eve party next year for about 250 people in our backyard. It'll run from 8pm until about 2am, so six hours total. We're having a full bar and a caterer with heavy appetizers. The ground is pretty flat grass, and a truck can pull right up to the area where we'd put the units.

I'm trying to figure out how many portable toilets we need. I know the alcohol and the duration mean we need more than the basic guideline. But I'm also wondering if the cold weather, it'll be below freezing here, changes anything. Do we need to rent extra units because they might freeze up, or does the cold actually slow things down? Should we consider a restroom trailer instead of standard units for a party like this?

For a six-hour New Year's Eve party with 250 guests, alcohol and heavy appetizers, plan for 6 to 8 portable toilets. The basic guideline starts at one standard unit per 50 to 75 people for a four-hour event, but alcohol and longer duration increase usage, so add units. Include at least one ADA-compliant portable toilet to meet the ADA 5 percent cluster rule for accessibility.

Cold weather below freezing does not require extra units; it may reduce biological activity but does not significantly alter usage rates. Operators add antifreeze to holding tanks to prevent freezing, so standard units function normally. A restroom trailer offers flushing toilets and sinks but requires level ground, electrical power, and possibly a water hookup, increasing complexity and cost. Standard units are simpler for a backyard event with truck access.

Service frequency for a one-day event is not weekly; units are delivered clean and serviced after the event. Pricing depends on unit type, rental duration, and delivery distance, not weather conditions.
