2026 Festival: Handwash stations or sanitizer for a 3-day event?

I'm planning a three-day music festival in a city park for about 5,000 people per day, with food vendors and beer gardens. We'll have 40 standard portable toilets and four ADA-compliant units, serviced daily. The ground is grass, and the vacuum truck can reach all clusters. I'm debating whether to add handwash stations at each cluster or just rely on hand sanitizer dispensers mounted on the units. Handwash stations need fresh water and gray water tanks, which means more servicing and potential freezing at night, but guests might prefer soap and water. Sanitizer is simpler but doesn't remove dirt. Which option works better for a multi-day event with food?

Use handwash stations at each cluster for a three-day festival with food service. Hand sanitizer does not remove dirt and grease from hands, which is a concern near food vendors. A handwash station provides running water, soap and paper towels for effective cleaning. Each station requires a fresh water tank and a gray water tank, which your daily service visit will handle. The vacuum truck will empty both the portable toilets and the gray water tanks during servicing. For cold nights, discuss winterization with your rental company; they may use antifreeze in the tanks or swap units to prevent freezing. Hand sanitizer dispensers mounted on units are a backup, not a replacement for handwashing when food is involved. Guests will notice and appreciate the effort toward hygiene.
