Can a hunting camp porta potty sit unused for two months without service?

I run a hunting camp in Montana that's only used about three weeks a year in the fall. The rest of the time, the camp is empty. I have a standard portable toilet placed for the crew, which is about ten people. The placement is on level gravel, and the vacuum truck can get to it fine when it's dry. My worry is what happens the other ten months. The waste just sits in the holding tank. Does it go bad? Will it ruin the plastic or cause a permanent stink that a service can't fix? I don't want to pay for monthly pumping when nobody is there. Can a hunting camp porta potty sit unused for two months without service? What's the longest you'd leave one idle?

A standard portable toilet can sit unused for two months without service, but you must take one precaution to prevent odor and damage. The main issue is evaporation and biological activity in the holding tank. Over time, the liquid level drops, leaving solids to dry and cake to the sides. A caked tank is harder to pump and clean. The deodorizer also loses effectiveness, which can lead to a persistent odor.

To prevent this, ask your rental company to add extra deodorizer and water to the holding tank after the last service of the season. This maintains the liquid level and keeps the waste submerged, slowing decomposition and preventing solids from hardening. Many operators use a formaldehyde-free deodorizer for environmental reasons, which works fine for this purpose.

I would not leave a unit idle for more than three months without a check. Beyond that, the risk of permanent residue and odor increases. Since your camp is only used three weeks a year, you might negotiate a seasonal service plan: one delivery and setup before hunting season, servicing during the season if needed, and one final pump-out and winterization after. This avoids paying for monthly service visits when the unit is empty. Just confirm the company will accommodate a long idle period with that prep.
