What's the real benefit of a handwash station over just sanitizer?

I'm planning a food truck event with about 500 people over six hours, serving barbecue and beer. The venue is a grassy park with truck access for delivery. I'm ordering standard portable toilets and ADA-compliant units per the ADA cluster rule, but I'm stuck on hand cleaning. Hand sanitizer dispensers are cheaper and easier, but I know health departments push for handwashing with soap and water at food events. Is the extra cost and setup for handwash stations worth it for guest safety and compliance, or will sanitizer do the job?

For a barbecue and beer food truck event, a handwash station is worth it over sanitizer alone. Guests leave the grill with grease and sauce on their hands, and alcohol gel does not cut that the way soap and water do.

Health departments commonly want real handwashing near food service at outdoor events, not just a pump bottle on a table. Inspectors look for a sink with fresh water, soap, and paper towels next to the toilet cluster. Sanitizer is fine as a backup at the food lines, but it is not a substitute when people have been eating with their hands.

Setup is straightforward if the park already has truck access. Most stations run off their own fresh tank and gray tank, so you do not need a hose unless you want one for a longer show. Ask the operator to place the station next to the standard units and ADA cabinets so the path is the same for everyone.
