Why does our unit smell worse on the second day of a hot weekend?

We rented a standard portable toilet for a big backyard party Saturday and Sunday. The rental company delivered and serviced it Friday afternoon, so it was fresh. Saturday morning it was fine, but by Sunday afternoon the smell was really strong, even with the door closed. It was a hot weekend, probably 85 degrees both days. We had about 40 people over, mostly Saturday evening with a barbecue and drinks, but a smaller group Sunday. The unit is on level grass, and the truck had no problem getting to the spot for delivery. I thought a standard unit would last the weekend without smelling. Is the heat the main reason it got bad so fast? Does a weekend party need a different service schedule than a single-day event?

Heat plus heavy Saturday use is why your standard unit smelled worse by Sunday. The tank starts fresh after a Friday service, but warm weather speeds up the bacteria that make odor, and a busy barbecue with drinks loads the tank faster than a quiet one-day rental.

By day two you are sitting on Saturday's waste plus Sunday's traffic, with less fresh deodorizer left in the charge. Closing the door does not stop that. The vent stack still moves air, and on a hot afternoon the smell gets stronger around the unit even when nobody is inside.

For a two-day backyard party in the mid-80s, Friday-only service is often not enough if Saturday is the big night. Ask about a Saturday evening or early Sunday service visit that dumps and recharges, or keep Sunday lighter if a mid-weekend pump is not available. Heat is a big driver, but heat plus cumulative use is what usually tips a weekend rental.
