Why does portable toilet deodorizer lose effectiveness in November cold?

Deb K.asked 0 viewsOdor, Cleaning & ChemicalsDeodorizerOdor controlCold weatherHolding tankService frequency

I service a construction site with 30 workers, six standard units on gravel, truck access is fine. We pump and dose them every Tuesday. In October, the deodorizer holds up fine. Come November, when overnight temps drop into the 30s, I get calls Thursday morning: 'They stink again.' The units smell clean when I leave, but the odor comes back overnight. I use a formaldehyde-free deodorizer, same brand all year. The cold seems to slow down whatever makes it work. Is it the liquid getting too thick to circulate? Does the bacteria in the tank go dormant? What actually changes in the holding tank when it gets cold?

The cold slows down the chemical reactions in the deodorizer and makes the waste breakdown less effective. Your formaldehyde-free deodorizer relies on enzymes and bacteria to digest waste and control odor. When temperatures drop into the 30s, those biological processes slow down or go dormant, and the deodorizer's surfactants and fragrances become less active. The liquid also thickens slightly, which can reduce circulation in the holding tank.

For a construction site with 30 workers, OSHA 1926.51 requires at least one standard unit and one urinal per 40 workers, so your six units are more than adequate. In cold weather, you may need to increase service frequency or switch to a winter-grade deodorizer formulated for lower temperatures. Some operators add a brine solution to the tank to prevent freezing and maintain chemical activity. Check with your supplier for cold-weather options.
