Can my crew pour a little bleach in the jobsite porta potty to kill the smell?

Our framing crew is on a two month house build and the standard unit by the driveway gets rank by Thursday. One of the guys keeps a jug of household bleach in his truck and wants to pour some down the hole between services. I told him to hold off until I knew what it does to the tank, but he says it's just cleaning product so what's the harm. I don't want to wreck whatever the service guy puts in there or get a bill for it. Does anything we add on our own mess with the tank chemistry or the pump out? And is there anything safe the crew can do to cut the smell between visits?

No, do not pour bleach in the portable toilet. Bleach reacts with the deodorizer in the holding tank, neutralizing the odor control chemicals and often creating a worse smell. It can also damage the tank seals and sensors over time, leading to leaks or service issues.

Your service driver adds a precise dose of formaldehyde-free deodorizer during the weekly service visit. If the unit smells by Thursday, ask your rental company to increase the service frequency. Heat, heavy use, or a full tank will overpower the deodorizer faster.

For a temporary fix, the crew can prop the door open for a few minutes to air it out, but adding anything to the tank risks a damage charge. Stick to the service schedule, it's the only reliable way to manage odor.
