Shower trailers: who rents them and what do they need on site?

We're organizing a volunteer build camp for a week, with about 40 people staying on-site. We have the portable toilet situation figured out, but there are no showers anywhere near this property. I've seen restroom trailers for events, but I'm curious about shower trailers specifically.

Who actually rents these? Is it just for construction sites or do volunteer groups like ours use them too? The site is a flat field, so a truck can reach the spot, but I don't know what else a shower trailer needs. Does it require a water hookup, or does it have its own tank? What about power and wastewater? For a week with 40 people, what size trailer would we even look for?

Jules covered the basics, but missed the permit check. A shower trailer on a flat field for a week likely needs a special event permit from the county health department, which will inspect the gray water disposal plan. The rental company handles the pumping, but you provide the permit. For 40 people, you need a trailer with at least three or four stalls to handle morning and evening rushes without a line. The fresh water tank will need refilling daily, and the gray water tank will fill just as fast, so budget for a service visit every day or every other day. Confirm the rental includes staking and tie-downs for wind.

  • Brooke L. Thanks Ray, I'll call the county health department tomorrow to ask about the special event permit for our wedding setup.

Shower trailers are rented by construction crews, disaster relief operations, film sets, and volunteer groups like yours who need temporary bathing facilities. A shower trailer typically includes its own fresh water tank and a gray water holding tank, so it does not require a permanent water hookup, but it does need a power source, either from a generator or a dedicated electrical connection. It must be placed on level ground to ensure proper drainage and function. For 40 people over a week, a unit with multiple shower stalls would be appropriate to prevent long wait times. The rental company will handle pumping the gray water tank, similar to servicing a standard portable toilet, and the service frequency depends on usage, daily might be needed for heavy use. Delivery distance, rental duration, and the size of the trailer are the main factors affecting cost.

  • Ray M. Jules is right about the level ground. A slight slope will make the gray water tank drain unevenly, and the doors on a trailer can swing shut or become unlatched. Our drivers carry leveling blocks for this.
