Why does our porta potty smell worse right after service in heat?

I service a construction site with six standard portable toilets. It's been hot, high 80s all week. Every Tuesday morning I pump them out, refill the deodorizer, wipe them down, and restock the paper. But by the afternoon, the crew foreman is calling to say the smell is worse than before I came. The units are on level gravel, my truck parks right next to them, and I use a standard formaldehyde-free deodorizer. The holding tanks are never more than half full when I service them. Why does the odor spike right after a service visit in the heat? Is it something about the fresh deodorizer hitting the warm tank?

Yes, the fresh deodorizer hitting the warm tank is likely causing the odor spike. A standard portable toilet's holding tank is warm from the heat, and when you add cold deodorizer, it can release gases trapped in the waste layer. The agitation from pumping also stirs up settled solids and releases odors temporarily.

In high heat, microbial activity increases, breaking down waste faster and producing more odor. Your formaldehyde-free deodorizer works by masking and breaking down waste, but it needs time to become fully effective after mixing. The initial chemical reaction can sometimes intensify the smell for a few hours.

To reduce this, try servicing earlier in the morning when the tank is cooler, or use a deodorizer designed for high-temperature conditions. Ensure you're adding the correct amount of deodorizer according to the product instructions, overdosing can sometimes worsen odors. Weekly service is standard, but in extreme heat, more frequent servicing might be needed to keep odors under control.
