Can a standard porta potty handle a wheelchair user temporarily?

I'm organizing a small outdoor fundraiser this weekend, about 75 people expected over four hours. We have food trucks and beer, so I rented three standard portable toilets and one handwash station. They're placed on level grass near the parking area, so the service truck can reach them easily. Yesterday, a volunteer told me her father uses a manual wheelchair and is coming. I don't have an ADA-compliant unit. Is a standard porta potty ever acceptable for a wheelchair user, even temporarily? Or is it completely unusable and unsafe? Should I try to upgrade one unit last minute, or is there another solution?

No, a standard portable toilet is not acceptable or safe for a wheelchair user, even temporarily. The doorway is too narrow, the interior lacks turning space, and the seat height is wrong. The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design require a 60-inch diameter turning space and specific grab bar placement, which a standard unit does not have.

You should upgrade one unit to an ADA-compliant portable toilet immediately. The ADA 5 percent cluster rule applies here since you have multiple units, meaning at least one must be accessible. Call your rental company now; last-minute changes may incur a higher delivery fee due to extra truck runs, but it is necessary for compliance and safety.

For your event size, three standard units plus one ADA unit and a handwash station is adequate, especially with alcohol served. Ensure the ADA unit is on firm, level ground with a clear path from the parking area.
