Why does our porta potty smell worse after service in hot weather?

We have a dozen standard units on a Phoenix high-rise site for 80 guys, six days a week. The rental company services them every Thursday. It's 110 degrees this week, and the crew is complaining that the units smell worse right after the vacuum truck leaves. The holding tanks are pumped, the deodorizer is blue and full, but the stink comes back fast. The units are on level paved ground with full truck access. Is the heat breaking down the chemicals quicker? Should we ask for a different type of deodorizer or more frequent service?

Yes, the heat breaks down the deodorizer faster and accelerates odor formation in the holding tank. Phoenix heat at 110 degrees cooks the waste, releasing ammonia and sulfur compounds that overpower the chemicals quickly. The blue deodorizer you see is a mix of fragrance, surfactant and biocide, but high temperatures reduce its effectiveness.

Your service frequency is the issue. Weekly service is standard for moderate climates, but in extreme heat with 80 workers using a dozen standard units six days a week, that schedule is insufficient. More waste accumulates, and the heat acts like an incubator.

Ask your rental company for twice-weekly service during hot months. They may also use a heat-stable, formaldehyde-free deodorizer formulated for high temperatures. Ensure the vent stack is clear on each unit, a blocked vent traps odors inside. With proper service frequency and the right chemicals, the odor should stay controlled even after the truck leaves.
