Porta Potty Forum

Drive through Christmas light show on our farm every night in December. Can a regular porta potty be heated for the volunteers?

We're running a drive through light display on our farm this year, 5pm to 10pm every night from Thanksgiving weekend through New Year's. Guests stay in their cars, so the porta potty is really for the six or seven volunteers who park cars and run the cocoa table. It gets down into the teens here at night, and the job site unit at my brother's place last winter was like sitting on a block of ice.

Is there such a thing as a heated standard unit, or is that only a restroom trailer thing? I've seen people mention a small heater but I'm nervous about anything with a flame inside a plastic box. We do have an outdoor outlet on the barn about 40 feet away.

Also, will the tank freeze if it only gets used a few times a night? Should I ask them for a different mix in December?

A standard portable toilet cannot be heated safely with an internal heater due to fire risk and lack of ventilation. For your six or seven volunteers, a standard unit is sufficient by OSHA 1926.51, but in freezing temperatures, the holding tank and seat will get cold. Operators use a brine or non-toxic antifreeze solution added to the tank during winter service visits to prevent freezing, even with light use. You should request this winterization service from your rental company for December. The antifreeze mix lowers the freezing point of the waste and is standard for cold weather rentals. Since you have an outdoor outlet 40 feet away, consider renting a deluxe portable toilet with a built-in electric heater if available, but these are less common and cost more due to the power requirement and insulated features. Restroom trailers have built-in heating systems but are larger and require more setup. Always avoid any portable heater inside a standard unit; it is a fire hazard and could melt the plastic or cause carbon monoxide buildup.
