I'm managing a 22-story high-rise project where crane time is a premium. Safety is pushing for portable toilets on every fourth floor to minimize worker travel time and keep them on task. We're looking at placing standard units and at least one ADA-compliant unit per cluster to meet the ADA cluster rule. The challenge is getting these units up and servicing them weekly without eating into critical lift schedules. Each floor has concrete slabs, no water or power for flushing models, and access for a vacuum truck is only at ground level. How do you typically coordinate crane lifts for unit placement and service? What's the most efficient way to handle waste pumping from upper floors without a dedicated service elevator?

The most efficient method for high-rise portable toilets is to lift them with the tower crane during non-peak hours and pump waste from the upper floors using a ground-based vacuum truck connected to a long hose run up the building's service shaft.

Coordinate the placement of standard units and the required ADA-compliant unit by scheduling crane lifts during a designated window, like early morning or lunch, to avoid critical material deliveries. The units are secured on pallets for the lift. For servicing, the vacuum truck parks at ground level. The operator runs a long hose, typically 100 to 200 feet, up a designated elevator or utility shaft to reach the units on the upper floors. The hose connects to the holding tank's pump-out port on each unit. This pump-out method avoids the need for a dedicated service elevator or moving the units back to the ground.

Adhere to OSHA 1926.51 for unit counts based on your peak crew size. Weekly service is standard, but hot weather or high usage will require more frequent pumping to control odor. The main cost drivers are the number of lifts required for initial placement and the extra labor and hose length for the specialized pumping service from height.

Hector's right about the hose run, but the vacuum truck operator needs a clear path to the service shaft and a building contact to unlock it. We carry 200-foot hoses, but every floor adds suction loss, so a 22-story building might need a booster pump or a second truck staged halfway. Also, the ADA-compliant unit is wider and heavier, confirm the crane's load capacity for that pallet. In winter, the long hose can freeze if not drained, and the holding tank antifreeze dose must be doubled for units that aren't serviced as often due to access issues.
