October 2026 fall festival: do we need porta potties with lights?

I'm coordinating a weekend fall festival in October 2026 that will run from 10 AM to 10 PM both days. We're expecting around 1,500 people per day, with food trucks and beer/wine sales. The festival is on a grassy city park field, and a service truck can drive right up to the edge. We've already planned for 25 standard portable toilets and 2 ADA-compliant units, but I'm worried about the evening hours. After sunset, the park gets pretty dark, and I'm concerned about guest safety and visibility around the porta potties. Do we need units with built-in solar lights, or should we rent separate lighting for the cluster? What's the best way to handle this for a two-day event with alcohol?

You need to light the portable toilet cluster, but you do not need the units to have built-in solar lights. Separate area lighting is the better and more cost-effective choice for your event.

The rental company will charge more for a standard portable toilet with a solar light than for a standard unit without one. For 25 units, that cost adds up quickly. Renting a few standalone floodlights on poles to illuminate the entire cluster from above is usually cheaper and provides much better visibility for guest safety. Good lighting helps prevent trips and falls on the ground around the units, which is especially important with alcohol service.

Your plan for 27 total units for 1,500 guests over a 12-hour day with alcohol is sound. The ADA 5 percent cluster rule means at least one accessible unit is required for a cluster of that size, so your two ADA-compliant units are appropriate. For a two-day event with heavy use, you will need a service visit between the two festival days. The vacuum truck can pump the holding tanks, add fresh deodorizer, and restock toilet paper to keep the units clean for the second day.
