Can we use portable urinals to meet OSHA for a 60-man crew?

We've got a 60-man crew on a five-month commercial job. The site is tight, and I'm trying to minimize the footprint for the toilet setup. OSHA 1926.51 for 20 to 199 workers says we need one toilet seat and one urinal per 40 workers. For 60 guys, that works out to two toilet seats and two urinals. I'm wondering if we can use more standalone portable urinal units and maybe only one full standard unit to meet the requirement and save space. The crew is all men, so the urinals would definitely get used. Has anyone done this and had it pass an inspection? Does the urinal count have to be tied one-for-one to the number of full units, or can we just meet the total fixture count?

Yes, you can use standalone portable urinals to meet the OSHA requirement for a 60-man crew. OSHA 1926.51 requires one toilet seat and one urinal per 40 workers for a crew of 20 to 199. For 60 workers, that is two toilet seats and two urinals total. The standard does not specify that the urinals must be part of a full unit, so two standalone urinals and one standard portable toilet with a seat would meet the fixture count.

This setup will save space. A standard unit is about four feet square, while a standalone urinal has a much smaller footprint. Your all-male crew will use the urinals heavily, which reduces traffic and wear on the single standard unit. However, every service visit will require the vacuum truck to pump both the standard unit and the urinals, so the service time and cost will reflect that.

For inspection, the key is the total number of fixtures. An OSHA inspector will check that you have two seats and two urinals available. Just ensure the units are serviced weekly to prevent overfilling and odors, which are common inspection flags. In a tight site, confirm the rental company has clear truck access to all units on service day to avoid missed service charges.
