October 2026 fall fair: do we need porta potties with lights?

I'm coordinating a three-day fall fair in a city park this October. We expect about 2,000 attendees daily, with food vendors, beer gardens, and activities running from noon to 10 PM each day. The ground is grassy and mostly level, and a vacuum truck can access the placement area. We're renting a mix of standard units and ADA-compliant units, but I'm concerned about safety after sunset. Should we specifically request units with solar lights, or is that unnecessary if the fairgrounds have general lighting? Also, do lighted units cost significantly more, and are they reliable for evening use?

Yes, you need to request portable toilets with solar lights for your fall fair. The fairgrounds' general lighting will not provide enough illumination inside each unit, and dark interiors create safety and liability risks after sunset. A solar light attaches to the roof, charges during the day, and turns on automatically at dusk. These lights are reliable for evening use, but you should confirm the rental company tests them before delivery.

Lighted units cost more to rent than unlit units. The price difference covers the light fixture, its maintenance, and the battery replacement schedule. For your event size and duration, the extra cost is justified by the improved safety.

Your unit mix sounds correct. Use the units per person guideline of about one unit per 50 people for a four-hour event, but add units for the ten-hour daily duration, alcohol service, and a crowd that includes families. The ADA-compliant portable toilet requirement applies since you have a cluster in a public park; provide at least one accessible unit. Plan for service every day or every other day due to the high attendance and long hours.
