What's the protocol for a porta potty fire on a construction site?

A standard portable toilet fire is rare but possible from a discarded cigarette or vandalism. The plastic shell and holding tank fumes can ignite. Our site has 60 workers on a 12-month high-rise project with 12 standard units on a paved lot, serviced weekly. The service truck has clear access. I know to call 911, evacuate the area and use a fire extinguisher if safe. But should the emergency plan specify a fire blanket for smothering? Do we need to cordon off a larger radius for holding tank fumes? What's the protocol after the fire for inspecting nearby units?

The protocol for a porta potty fire on a construction site is to evacuate immediately, call 911, and use a fire extinguisher only if it is safe and you are trained, but do not attempt to smother it with a blanket due to explosion risk from the holding tank fumes. Cordon off a radius of at least 100 feet around the burning unit to protect people from potential tank rupture or toxic smoke. After the fire, inspect all nearby units for heat damage, melted plastic, or compromised structural integrity; any unit within 20 feet likely needs replacement. The rental company must handle disposal and provide replacements, as damaged units are unsafe. For your site with 60 workers, OSHA 1926.51 requires at least two toilets (one seat and one urinal per 40 workers), so your 12 units exceed the minimum, which is good for maintaining sanitation during an outage. Weekly service is standard, but high use or heat may require more frequent visits to prevent overfilling and reduce odor risks.
