Family of four during septic repair: Is one porta potty enough for two weeks?

Our septic system is getting replaced next week, so we are going to be without a working bathroom for about two weeks. There are four of us: two adults and two kids (ages 8 and 10). The rental company dropped off a standard portable toilet on our gravel driveway yesterday, it's the basic non-flushing kind with a holding tank. The driver said they'll service it weekly. We have plenty of space, and the vacuum truck can pull right up to it without any issues. I'm just wondering if one unit is really enough for a family of four for two full weeks. Should I ask for a second one, or maybe upgrade to a deluxe unit with a sink? How often do you service yours with kids around?

One standard portable toilet is enough for a family of four for two weeks, but the weekly service may not be sufficient with kids. The holding tank holds 50 to 70 gallons, and a family can fill that in less than a week. I always get a unit serviced twice a week on my residential jobs with crews of four or five because daily use adds up fast. Kids tend to use more toilet paper and may not be as conservative with flushes in a flushing unit. A deluxe unit with a sink is an upgrade that adds a handwash station, which is a good idea for hygiene. The rental cost will be higher for a deluxe unit and for adding a second service visit per week. You have the space and truck access, so ask the company to increase the service frequency to twice weekly for the two weeks. That will keep the unit clean and prevent overfilling.
