Can a porta potty serve a family of four for a month-long remodel?

Our only bathroom is getting ripped out for a month while we expand our kitchen, so we’re looking at renting a porta potty for the first time. There are four of us, two adults, two kids. The unit will sit on our gravel driveway, which is level, and the rental company’s truck can pull right up to it.

I’m trying to figure out if a standard portable toilet with weekly service will be enough for a family our size for four weeks. The rental guy said it’s the most common setup, but I’m worried it’ll get, well, unpleasant by day six or seven. Should we be looking at a deluxe unit with a flushing toilet and sink, or is that overkill? What’s the real difference in capacity and comfort for a long-term situation like this?

A standard unit with weekly service will get a family of four through a month, but day six and seven are exactly when it starts to feel rough, so ask for a second pump-out each week if you can swing it.

We did five weeks with a standard unit during our bathroom gut, two adults and a teenager. Capacity was never the problem. Smell and running out of toilet paper were. A household uses it differently than a work crew: everyone is home at night, mornings stack up, and kids go through more paper than you would guess. Moving to two service visits a week fixed the smell, and the driver restocked paper each time.

A deluxe unit is nicer, mostly for the sink and the extra room when you are helping a little one. The flush runs off a fresh water tank that also gets refilled on service day, so it does not cut down how often they need to come. With small kids it is not overkill, but think of it as a comfort upgrade, not a capacity fix.

Small things that helped us: face the door away from the street, stick a battery motion light inside, keep a lidded trash can for wipes so they stay out of the tank, and leave sanitizer in there for night trips. Have them set it on the gravel as close to your back door as the truck can still reach, so the walk at 2am is short.
