What's the 'fuel surcharge' on my porta potty invoice?

I rent a standard portable toilet and an ADA-compliant portable toilet for my ranch crew and guests year-round. The service truck drives 40 miles each way on gravel roads to reach us. My monthly invoice always has a separate line item for a fuel surcharge. I understand diesel is expensive, but the delivery and service fees already seem to cover the truck trip. Does this surcharge pay for something specific like the vacuum pump or extra wear on the truck? Is it negotiable if I commit to a longer rental term?

A fuel surcharge covers the extra diesel burned by the service truck's engine and the vacuum pump during the round trip to your site, especially on long or rough routes. Your 80-mile round trip on gravel roads consumes more fuel than a typical urban route and causes additional wear on the truck. The delivery fee covers the base cost of transporting the units, while the service fee covers the labor and supplies for pumping, cleaning and restocking. The surcharge is a separate line item because fuel prices fluctuate and long distances require more engine run time for the pump. It is not typically negotiable, even for long-term rentals, because the fuel cost is a direct expense to the operator. You can ask your rental company if they offer a fixed-rate contract that includes all travel costs, but remote sites usually incur extra charges.
