What's the benefit of a portable urinal versus a standard unit for a men's crew?

We have a 20-man framing crew on a six-week residential build. The site is a flat, gravel lot with good truck access. We have two standard units. The crew takes staggered breaks, but there is still a line during the morning and afternoon rush. I am considering adding a portable urinal to the cluster to speed things up.

The portable urinal is a wall-mounted or standalone fixture designed for liquid waste only. It has a smaller footprint than a standard unit and a smaller holding tank. The benefit is that it can handle more users per hour for that specific function. It would free up the full toilets for longer visits. I have seen them used on bigger commercial sites.

Is the throughput gain significant enough to be worth the extra monthly rental fee and the space it takes up? Do crews actually use them, or do they just go to the nearest unit regardless of type?

Yes, a portable urinal will significantly reduce wait times for a 20-man crew with two standard units. A portable urinal handles liquid waste only and has a much higher throughput than a full toilet. Men will use it for quick breaks, leaving the standard units free for longer visits. Your crew will use it because it is faster and more convenient during rush periods.

The OSHA 1926.51 standard for 20 workers requires one toilet, so you are already above minimum. Adding a urinal is about efficiency, not compliance. It takes less space than a standard unit and costs less to rent monthly because it has a smaller holding tank and uses less deodorizer. Your driver will service it on the same weekly visit as the other units. On a flat gravel site with good truck access, placement is easy. The gain in crew productivity outweighs the small extra cost.
