Why Does Our Porta Potty Smell Worse After Service?

We are three months into a full bathroom renovation and have a standard portable toilet on our gravel driveway. The service truck comes every Tuesday and I always notice that the unit smells worse for about half a day right after they leave. It is a strong, chemical smell that hits you when you open the door, not the usual milder odor. The unit is on level ground and the driver has clear truck access. He pumps it out, adds that blue liquid deodorizer, and restocks the paper. I am wondering if the deodorizer itself causes that initial strong smell, or if it is something about how they clean the inside. Does this happen to anyone else? Is it the type of deodorizer they use, or is it just part of the process?

That strong hit right after service is the fresh deodorizer charge, not a cleaning problem. The driver pumps the holding tank down, adds clean water and a new dose of the blue stuff, and at full strength with nothing to work on yet, the fragrance is all you smell. Once the unit gets used for a few hours it mixes in and mellows out, which lines up with your half day.

We had a standard unit at our yard most of last fence season and saw the same thing every service day. A few things helped:

Leave the door propped open a while after the truck pulls out if nobody needs it right away. The vent stack only moves so much air with the door shut.

Ask the driver if he measures the charge or just pours. Ours poured heavy until we mentioned it, and the next visit was noticeably milder.

Ask whether the company carries a lighter or unscented formula. Ours did, we just had to ask.

If it ever smells sour or like sewage right after service instead of perfume and chemical, that points to a short pump or a dirty tank, and that's worth a call. What you're describing sounds normal.
