Flushing portable toilet vs. deluxe unit: which is better for a wedding?

I'm planning my wedding for 140 guests on my parents' lawn in Charleston. The event will run about six hours with dinner and an open bar. We're putting up a tent and the band, but the house bathrooms are too few. The rental company offers a deluxe unit with a flushing bowl, a sink and a mirror, or a flushing portable toilet that's more basic but still has the flush mechanism. The ground is level grass and a truck can get within twenty feet. I like the idea of a flush for guest comfort, but the deluxe has more space and the sink built in. Which one feels more 'wedding appropriate'? Does the flush matter more than the extra room?

Go with the deluxe unit for a wedding. The sink inside matters more than the flush, because guests in nice clothes actually wash up when the sink is right there instead of walking to a separate station in the dark.

We host weddings in our barn and what guests notice is room, not the flush. A long dress, a suit jacket, a clutch, all of that needs space to turn around, and the mirror gets a lot of use after dinner and dancing. The basic flushing toilet still feels like a portable toilet once you are inside. The deluxe unit feels more like a small bathroom.

A few things that helped us on lawn setups:

  • Put the units on the level grass near the tent edge, but not right beside the dinner tables.
  • Run a string of lights to the doors. Six hours with an open bar means plenty of trips after sunset.
  • Ask the company to stock extra paper and soap before the reception starts, since towels and soap go first in our experience.
  • With 140 guests and an open bar, have the rental company confirm the unit count for your hours instead of guessing.

If you have older relatives or anyone using a wheelchair, add an accessible unit too.
