Why does our porta potty smell worse after a service visit?

We've had a standard unit on the ranch for our seasonal hands for about six weeks, serviced every other week because it's low use. The ground is gravel, and the truck access is clear. For the last two services, the unit has developed a stronger, almost sour smell within hours after the driver leaves. It's a noticeable increase, not the usual background odor. The driver pumps the holding tank, sprays it down, and adds fresh deodorizer. I'm wondering if this is a normal part of the process or if something is off. Does the agitation from pumping release trapped odors? Could the wrong type of chemical be used? Is it a sign the tank isn't being cleaned properly?

A stronger smell right after a service visit usually means the tank got stirred up and the fresh deodorizer has not had time to settle yet.

When the driver pumps the holding tank, the hose agitates sludge that was sitting on the bottom. That releases gases that were trapped under the liquid. Fresh chemical goes in after, but it needs a few hours of mixing with new waste before the odor drops back down. On a low-use ranch unit, that lag can feel worse because there is not enough daily traffic to blend the chemical through the tank quickly.

Ask the driver whether they are doing a full wall wipe and whether they are charging the tank with enough water plus deodorizer for the tank size. A light rinse that leaves residue in the corners will smell sour as soon as it warms up. Wrong chemical mix (too little product, or a fragrance that fades in heat) shows up the same way.

If it keeps happening after two visits, request a deep clean or a unit swap. Clear gravel and truck access are not the problem here. It is almost always agitation plus incomplete recharge, not a broken process.
