We're building a cabin in rural Oregon and plan to live on-site with our family of five for the next year. Our only bathroom is gutted, so we need a portable toilet solution that's reliable and won't require constant servicing. The ground is level gravel, and a truck can easily reach the spot. Your family of five is well within the capacity of a single unit. The units per person guideline for events is a starting point, and a family uses a unit far less intensely than a crowd at a festival. The main difference is the service schedule. Weekly service is the industry norm, but a family of five living full-time will fill the holding tank of a standard or deluxe unit faster. Expect to need service every four to five days to prevent the tank from reaching capacity. A flushing deluxe unit uses fresh water, so its waste tank may fill slightly faster than a non-flushing standard unit.
