I was helping with a community festival last weekend, and a guest pointed at the standard portable toilet and asked me a great question. We had about 300 people over six hours with food trucks, and all the units had that familiar blue liquid in the holding tank. He wanted to know if the blue dye is purely for looks or if it's part of how the deodorizer actually works to control odor. The blue dye in a standard portable toilet is not necessary for the deodorizer to work chemically. Its main purpose is visual. The dye hides the contents of the holding tank from the user, which improves the experience. It also serves as an indicator for the operator during a service visit; the color shows the fluid level and confirms that deodorizer is present.

The deodorizer itself is a mixture of fragrance to mask odor, surfactants to break the surface tension of waste and help it settle, and a biocide to control bacteria. These active ingredients work regardless of the dye color. Many operators now use formaldehyde-free deodorizer because wastewater treatment plants often restrict formaldehyde.

For your festival with 300 people over six hours and food trucks, the guideline of about one unit per 50 to 75 people would suggest several units, and the food service means you should add more. The deodorizer in each unit needs to handle heavy use, which is why weekly service is the norm but events often require service before and after.
