Can we add a privacy tent around our wedding porta potties?

We’re getting married on my parents’ property in Charleston this spring. It’s a backyard wedding with about 140 guests, a tent, a band, dinner and an open bar. We’ve rented four portable toilets, three standard units and one ADA-compliant unit. They’ll be on level grass about 50 feet from the reception tent, and the delivery truck can get right to the spot. My only worry is that the units will be in plain sight from the dance floor. I want guests to have a nice experience and not feel like they’re walking into a construction site. Is it common or even allowed to set up a decorative privacy tent or screen around a toilet cluster? Would that cause any issues with ventilation or service access for the vacuum truck?

Yes, a privacy screen or tent around a wedding toilet cluster is common, as long as the vacuum truck can still reach the units for a service visit.

Leave a clear path on the service side, usually the rear or side where the driver pulls the hose to the holding tank. Do not wrap fabric tight against the roof vents on each unit. Those vents need airflow or the cabins get stuffy for guests.

A freestanding frame with side panels or lattice, open at the top and with a walk-in gap toward the reception, works well. Keep door swings clear so guests are not fighting fabric when they exit. Tell your rental company before delivery day so the driver knows where the screen sits and does not treat it as blocked access.

We did this on a backyard wedding last year. Guests never saw the plastic walls from the dance floor, and the Friday pump still happened on schedule.
