Handwash station for an outdoor holiday party in November 2026: necessary?

I'm planning a holiday party for about 80 people in my backyard in late November 2026, with a catered buffet and an open bar. We'll have a couple of standard portable toilets placed on the lawn, which is flat and accessible for a service truck. Since it's an evening event with food handling and drinks, I'm debating whether to add a handwash station for guest hygiene. The weather could be chilly, around 40-50°F, and I'm concerned about water freezing or guests avoiding cold water. Is a handwash station necessary here, or would hand sanitizer dispensers at the restrooms suffice? What do others do for cold-weather events?

A handwash station is worth adding for an 80-person backyard party with a buffet and open bar. Guests leave the food line with sticky fingers, and a standard portable toilet usually only has a tiny gel pump if it has anything at all.

Sanitizer at the toilets covers a quick wipe, but it does not cut grease or food residue the way soap and water do. For a catered evening with drinks I put the handwash next to the buffet or between the food and the toilets so people actually use it instead of walking past it.

November nights in the 40s rarely freeze a handwash overnight if the party ends before midnight and pickup is the next day. If a hard freeze is in the forecast, ask the rental company about a heated or insulated handwash rather than putting anything in the fresh tank yourself. Keep the station out of the wind if you can, and make sure it gets emptied on the normal service schedule.

We ran the same setup last Thanksgiving for a smaller crowd and the handwash got more traffic than the toilets during dinner.
