Family reunion with a food line: do we need a handwash station by the porta potty?

We are hosting a backyard family reunion this fall with about 90 people, a long food table, and no indoor bathroom the guests can use. I already planned on one standard unit near the edge of the yard where the truck can reach it.

What I am stuck on is hand washing. Half the family wants a separate handwash station next to the toilet because people will be grabbing ribs and sides all afternoon. The other half says a pump of sanitizer on a folding table is enough for a private party and we should skip the extra rental.

There will be kids, older relatives, and food sitting out for hours. No health inspector is coming, but I still do not want people wiping hands on their pants between the toilet and the buffet.

For a reunion this size with a food line, do you rent the standalone sink, or is sanitizer actually fine? Any placement tips if the sink is worth it?

Yes, you should rent a handwash station for a family reunion with a food line. Hand sanitizer is not a substitute for handwashing with soap and water before handling food. A handwash station provides running water, soap, and paper towels, which removes germs and visible dirt more effectively than sanitizer alone.

Place the handwash station right next to the portable toilet cluster, so guests use it on their way out. Make sure it is on level ground and visible from the food area. For 90 people, one standard unit and one handwash station is a good start, but consider adding a second unit if the event lasts more than four hours or if you expect heavy use.

Handwash stations need servicing too; they have a fresh water tank and a gray water tank that may need refilling and pumping during your event. Discuss service frequency with your rental company, especially if the reunion is all day. The extra cost comes from the unit rental, delivery, and any additional service visits, but it is worth it for food safety and guest comfort.
