Missed service because our gate was locked in November 2026. Who's responsible?

We rented a standard portable toilet for our bathroom renovation, scheduled for weekly service. The driver came yesterday but couldn't get in because our side gate was locked. I forgot to unlock it, my bad. The unit is on our driveway, which is level gravel, and the truck usually parks right on the street. Now I'm wondering who handles access issues like this. Does the rental company charge for a missed service visit? What's the standard practice if the driver can't reach the unit?

The rental company charges for the missed service visit because access is the customer's responsibility. The weekly service is part of the rental agreement, and when the driver arrives and cannot reach the unit due to a locked gate or other obstruction, it is logged as a missed service. The driver's time and fuel are still used, so the company bills for the trip. Standard practice is to require clear truck access to the unit on every service day. For a standard portable toilet on a driveway, the truck needs to park within hose range, typically about 25 feet. If access is blocked, the driver leaves without servicing, and the customer is responsible for the cost. You should contact the rental company to reschedule the service and confirm the gate is unlocked next time.
