Family of four, no plumbing until spring 2027. One porta potty enough?

We're gutting our only bathroom for a full renovation, and the contractor says we won't have plumbing again until spring 2027. That's over a year with no working toilet or sink inside. We rented one standard portable toilet for our driveway, it's just me, my spouse, and our two kids (ages 8 and 11). The unit sits on level gravel, and the vacuum truck can pull right up to it on service day. But after the first week, I'm wondering: is one unit enough for a family of four using it daily for everything? What if someone gets sick, or we have guests? Should we consider upgrading to a deluxe unit with a sink, or even adding a second standard unit?

One standard portable toilet is not enough for a family of four for daily long-term use. The holding tank in a standard unit holds 50 to 70 gallons, and weekly service is the industry norm. For your household size and duration, the unit will fill up too quickly, especially with kids and potential illnesses. Add a second standard unit. This splits the use, reduces overloading, and provides a backup if one unit needs extra servicing.

For guests, use the event planning guideline: one unit per 50 to 75 people for a short event. Your family alone is near that range for daily use over a year. A deluxe unit with a sink adds convenience but costs more due to the flushing mechanism and fresh water system, which may require more frequent service in cold weather. Renting a second standard unit is more practical and cost-effective than upgrading to a deluxe model. Discuss service frequency with your rental company; you might need twice-weekly pumping during high-use periods or illnesses.
