Porta Potty Forum

Whole house repipe means no water for about three days. Will anyone even rent a porta potty that short, and is a standard unit ok for my mom?

We finally pulled the trigger on repiping our house. The old galvanized lines are shot. Plumber says the main gets shut off Tuesday morning and we probably won't have water back until Thursday night, maybe Friday if the inspector is slow. He suggested we rent a porta potty instead of driving to the gas station all week.

Two things I can't figure out. First, is three or four days even something they'll deliver for, or do they make you take a full week or a month no matter what? Second, my mom lives with us. She's 78, walks with a cane, and is a little unsteady stepping up. Is the step into a regular unit going to be a problem for her, or should I be asking for the accessible one with the grab bars? We have a flat concrete pad by the side gate where it could go.

Yes, rental companies will deliver a portable toilet for three or four days, and you should absolutely get an ADA-compliant unit for your mom. Most companies offer short-term rentals for exactly this kind of situation, often with a minimum rental period of a few days or a weekend. The standard unit has a step up of about six to eight inches, which is a trip hazard for someone unsteady with a cane. The ADA-compliant portable toilet has a lower step, grab bars inside and out, and more interior space for maneuvering with a cane. Since you are placing it on your property for family use, the ADA cluster rule does not legally require an accessible unit, but it is the right choice for safety. Your flat concrete pad by the gate is perfect placement, just make sure there is clear access for the delivery truck and the vacuum truck on the service day if you need one. For a three-day rental with light use by a few people, you may not even need a service visit, but ask the rental company about their policy. They will likely recommend a weekly service schedule, but for a short rental, they can often set it up clean and pick it up without a mid-rental service.
