Porta Potty Forum

Mice moved into the staff porta potty behind our barn. Will the service tech clean that up, or is it on us?

We keep one standard unit parked behind the barn for staff and the bar crew on wedding weekends. It stays out all season and gets serviced once a week. Ever since the hay field next to it got cut a couple weeks ago, we've had mice everywhere.

Saturday morning I opened it up and the toilet paper roll was shredded into a little nest on the floor, there were droppings on the seat lid and along the urinal, and something had chewed the corner of the paper holder.

Our service day is Thursday. Is this something the tech will actually clean and sanitize, or should I be wiping it down myself before staff use it Friday? I don't love the idea of my crew handling that.

Also, is there anything that keeps mice out of a unit sitting right next to a barn and a field, short of moving it out onto the gravel lot?

Most service techs will clean up a mouse infestation, but you need to call your rental company before your Thursday service day. The standard weekly service visit includes pumping the holding tank, adding deodorizer, and wiping down the interior surfaces, which covers the droppings and sanitizes the seat. However, a nest and chewed paper holder are damage. The tech will likely remove the nest and clean the unit, but the rental company will probably bill you for the extra labor and any parts, like a new paper holder, if it's not covered by a damage waiver. It's not something your staff should have to handle. To keep mice out, there isn't a magic spray. Mice are after the paper for nesting. You could ask the company to leave the unit with no toilet paper after service, and your staff can bring a roll each time they use it. The best long-term fix is moving the unit to the gravel lot, away from the barn and field edge, which removes the shelter and food source.
