Hunting camp in Montana: will a standard porta potty freeze solid in October?

Setting up a hunting camp in western Montana. We have four guys coming up most weekends in October and November, using a standard unit we rent long-term. The camp is on a dirt track off the main road, and the rental company's vacuum truck can park right next to it. Nights are already dropping below freezing, and I know the holding tank will ice up if we don't do something. The unit gets light use, just weekends. Should we ask the rental company to add antifreeze for winterization, or is a standard porta potty the wrong type for cold weather? What do other camps use?

Ask for winterization. A standard unit gets through a Montana October fine once the company charges the tank with a salt or antifreeze brine instead of plain water. Our farm unit sits out through freezing nights every fall and the setup is the same: the driver adds the brine at each service, and the holding tank stays slushy instead of locking into a block.

What helped us with light weekend use:

  • Ask whether they refresh the brine every visit. Rain, snowmelt and use all water it down, and a weak mix freezes anyway.
  • Park the unit where it gets afternoon sun and some wind block, like the south side of a shed or a tree line, with the door facing away from the wind.
  • Keep the lid closed between uses so the tank isn't pulling in cold air.
  • If the sanitizer is gel, keep a bottle in the cabin. Ours went thick and useless on cold mornings.

Where it goes wrong is a missed service right before a hard cold snap, when the tank is full of diluted liquid. Give them your hunting weekends so the visit lands right before you show up. The winterization page covers the basics.
