Framing three spec houses on side by side lots: one porta potty per lot or can the crews share?

We're framing three spec houses on side by side lots in a new subdivision, same builder, same street. My crew is 9 guys and we bounce between all three houses depending on which one is ready for walls or trusses. The builder already has one standard unit at the first lot and wants to know if that covers us for all three, or if each lot needs its own.

The lots are about 60 feet wide, so the far house is maybe 150 feet from the unit. Roofers and electricians show up on some days too, so a busy day could be 20 or so people spread across the three lots.

Does OSHA look at this as one site or three separate sites? And is walking two lots over to the john going to be a problem, or is that normal on subdivision work? Trying to sort it out before the builder renews the rental for next month.

OSHA considers this one site because the lots are adjacent and the same crew works all three. The OSHA construction sanitation standard, 29 CFR 1926.51(c), requires one toilet for 20 or fewer workers. Your crew of 9 plus up to 20 total workers on busy days means one standard unit meets the minimum. Walking 150 feet to the toilet is normal on subdivision sites and not an OSHA violation.

However, a single unit for three lots is a tight fit. The builder should consider adding a second standard unit for convenience and to handle peak use when subcontractors are present. More units reduce wait times and keep workers on task. Place the units centrally or at the two busiest lots.

Service frequency depends on use. Weekly service is standard, but with 20 people, the holding tank may fill faster. The rental company will adjust service if needed. Ensure the unit is accessible for the vacuum truck on service day.
