2026: are biodegradable deodorizers effective in high-heat climates?

My current crew of 80 is on a 6-month high-rise job in Phoenix. We have a cluster with six standard units and one ADA-compliant unit. The ground is compacted dirt, and the vacuum truck can pull right up to them. We get weekly service, but by day three in this heat, the deodorizer in the holding tank is shot. The smell gets rough by lunchtime. I'm using whatever standard blue liquid the rental company provides.

I keep hearing about biodegradable, formaldehyde-free deodorizers. But I'm skeptical. Does that stuff hold up when the temperature inside a plastic box hits 120 degrees? Do they control odor for a full week, or do they break down even faster than the old-school chemicals? I need something that lasts in this heat.

Biodegradable, formaldehyde-free deodorizers can be effective in high-heat climates, but they require more frequent service than weekly in Phoenix summer conditions. The heat accelerates microbial activity and chemical breakdown in the holding tank, overwhelming any deodorizer within days. Formaldehyde-free formulas rely on enzymes and bacteria to digest waste, which work faster in heat but also deplete quicker. Your weekly service frequency is standard for temperate climates, but in extreme heat with 80 workers, the units need servicing twice weekly. The rental company's standard blue liquid likely contains a formaldehyde-free deodorizer already, as most operators switched due to wastewater plant restrictions. No chemical lasts a full week at 120°F interior temperatures with heavy use. Talk to your rental operator about increasing service to twice weekly, this is a common adjustment for desert jobs. The cost driver is the extra labor, fuel, and disposal fees for additional service visits, not the deodorizer type itself.
