High-rise site: what if the crane is down on service day?

We have a 20-story commercial build going. The crew is 150 to 200, depending on the day. We have a cluster of 15 standard units and one ADA-compliant unit on the 10th-floor deck. The rental company's vacuum truck can't get up there, so the crane lowers the units to the ground for the weekly service visit.

My question is, what happens if the crane is down for maintenance or repair on a service day? The truck shows up, the units are stuck on the deck. Does the rental company just skip it and bill us anyway? Do they come back the next day? I need a plan for this. How do other superintendents handle crane-dependent service?

The rental company logs a missed service and bills for the trip. A vacuum truck cannot service units that are not at ground level, and the operator's contract will state that access is your responsibility. They will not send a crew up the building or reschedule without a new service call fee. You need a backup plan for crane downtime.

High-rise sites with crane-dependent service require coordination. Talk to your rental company about their policy for missed service due to access issues. Most charge for the trip because the driver and truck are dispatched and your site is on their route. Some may offer a credit if you reschedule within a day or two, but that is not standard.

Superintendents handle this by scheduling crane maintenance on non-service days, having a secondary hoisting method like a material lift or forklift on standby, or placing a ground-level cluster for overflow and service continuity. Your crew of 150 to 200 workers requires at least four standard units and one urinal per OSHA 1926.51, so your current setup is adequate if serviced weekly. Heat or heavy use would require more frequent service, but crane access remains the bottleneck.
