How do operators choose deodorizer brands for their fleet?

I'm a new operator with 12 units, mostly standard non-flushing types with holding tanks, and I'm trying to pick a deodorizer. I'm looking at cost per gallon, how long the blue dye and odor control last between weekly service visits, and whether local wastewater plants will take it. Some plants have rules against formaldehyde, so I'm leaning toward formaldehyde-free formulas. But I don't want to sacrifice performance for price. What do experienced operators prioritize when choosing a brand? Is it all about the lowest cost, or do you pay more for something that keeps units fresher longer and avoids disposal issues?

Experienced operators prioritize wastewater plant acceptance, odor control duration and cost efficiency when choosing a deodorizer brand. Formaldehyde-free formulas are now standard because many treatment plants restrict formaldehyde-based products, avoiding disposal rejections and fines. Performance matters more than the lowest cost per gallon, a deodorizer that keeps a standard unit fresher for a full week between service visits reduces customer complaints and service calls. Look for a product with a strong surfactant system to break down waste, a stable blue dye that doesn’t fade quickly, and a fragrance that masks odors effectively without being overpowering. Test samples in your own units under typical use; heat, high traffic or alcohol at events can shorten effectiveness. While weekly service is the norm, a superior deodorizer might allow slightly longer intervals in light-use scenarios, saving on labor and fuel. Ultimately, balance disposal compliance, customer satisfaction and operational costs, not just the sticker price.
