Can we add our own deodorizer to a rented porta potty?

We have one standard portable toilet for a crew of eight on a residential addition project. The unit is on a gravel pad about 20 feet from where the service truck parks, and it gets serviced weekly. By Wednesday, the smell inside is pretty strong, especially when the sun hits it. I'm thinking about dropping a deodorizer puck in the holding tank myself to help it last until Friday's service. Is that something you do, or does it mess with the rental company's chemical mix? Will they charge extra if they notice it?

Call your rental company before you drop anything in the tank, because most of them would rather add a mid week charge themselves than have you guess at the chemistry. The deodorizer they put in at each service visit is mixed for that tank size, and some of the treatment plants they dump at are picky about what ends up in the load. A random puck from the hardware store can foam up or just mask the smell for a day.

What actually helped on our framing jobs with a similar crew size:

  • Turn the door away from the afternoon sun if the pad allows it. Heat is what cooks the smell by Wednesday.
  • Keep the lid down and the vent stack clear. A blocked vent makes it way worse.
  • Ask if they can bump you to twice a week while it's warm. Eight people on one unit with weekly service is right at the edge.
  • Some outfits will leave you a couple of their own deodorizer packets to toss in midweek. That way it matches what's already in the holding tank.

We got charged once for a clogged tank, never for asking a question, so just ask.
