Do we need a handwash station if the restroom trailer has sinks?

We're renting a six-stall restroom trailer with flushing toilets and internal sinks for a 150-guest wedding reception. It has its own fresh water tank and a generator for the lights and water pump. The caterer is bringing a tent with passed apps and a buffet, and we'll have a full bar. The trailer will be placed on level grass behind the barn, and the rental company said they can service it with their vacuum truck after the event.

My question: since the trailer has sinks inside, do we still need to rent a separate handwash station to comply with health department rules for events with food? I've seen them at festivals next to standard units, but never with a trailer. Is the requirement different if the sinks are inside the restroom doors?

You usually do not need a separate handwash station just because a restroom trailer already has sinks inside.

The trailer sinks cover guests washing hands after using the toilets. Health departments that require a freestanding handwash station are usually focused on the food service area, not the restroom doors. If your caterer is plating or guests are grabbing food from a buffet tent, inspectors often want soap, water, and towels right at that tent so food handlers and guests can wash without walking to the trailer.

Call your county health department or the special event permit contact and ask whether the trailer sinks count for restroom compliance and whether the catering tent needs its own station. Rules vary by jurisdiction. Festivals park handwash stations next to standard units because those units often have no sink or only a tiny tank. Your six-stall trailer with fresh water and a pump is a different setup.

If the permit letter already lists handwash at the food area as a line item, rent one for the tent and leave the trailer as the restroom.
