Can I use a portable toilet for a hunting camp all season?

We run a hunting camp in the mountains outside Bozeman from early September through the end of November. It's just for weekends, so the standard portable toilet would sit mostly unused during the week. We have about eight people each weekend, no alcohol, and the camp is near a creek on uneven ground. The service truck can make it down the access road, but it's a 40-mile drive for the rental company.

I'm wondering if a standard unit is the right choice for this kind of intermittent, cold-weather use. I've heard the holding tank can freeze solid if it's not serviced often. Should we be looking at a deluxe portable toilet with a flushing mechanism or just stick with the basic model?

Yes, a standard portable toilet works for a weekend hunting camp from early September through November. You do not need a deluxe flushing unit for about eight people who only show up on weekends.

The freeze risk is the real issue once nights get hard. A holding tank that sits half full through a cold week can freeze solid, and then the next service visit gets delayed until it thaws or they swap the unit. Ask the rental company for a winter-capable deodorizer and a clear winterization plan. Keep the tank pumped down before a hard freeze is in the forecast. Weekend-only use fills slower than a daily crew, which helps, but a frozen tank still ruins the week.

Place it on a firm, level pad near the creek. Soft bank ground tips units and keeps the vacuum hose from reaching. Gravel or plywood under the feet usually does the job. Confirm they can commit to that 40-mile access road on a set cadence, and get the service schedule in writing before opening weekend.
