Why does our unit smell like ammonia after a hot week?

We have a standard portable toilet on a residential addition site in Chicago. It's been there for six weeks with weekly service. The crew of eight uses it daily, and it sits on a level gravel pad with easy truck access. But after a hot week, it develops a strong ammonia smell that hits you even after the service truck just left. The deodorizer is blue and fresh, but the odor comes back fast. That ammonia smell comes from urea in urine breaking down into ammonia gas, a process that accelerates dramatically in heat. Your weekly service is standard for a crew of eight, but hot weather speeds up bacterial action in the holding tank, overwhelming the deodorizer between visits.

The blue color means the deodorizer is present, but its fragrance and biocides can't keep up with rapid ammonia production. Heat also thins the liquid, letting gases escape more easily through the vent stack.

Ask your rental company if they use a heat-stable, formaldehyde-free deodorizer formulated for summer conditions. They might need to increase the service frequency to twice weekly during hot spells, as more frequent pumping removes the waste before ammonia builds up. Placement in shade helps too, if possible.
