Our bathroom remodel is stretching into November and December. We already have a standard unit on the driveway because the house toilet is torn out. Last winter a neighbor said their tank gelled overnight when nights dipped below freezing.

Does the holding tank and hand sanitizer actually freeze solid in a residential unit, or do rental companies dose differently for cold weather? We are in a place that regularly hits the teens at night. The weekly service visit is Fridays. If a hard freeze hits midweek, is there anything we should ask for before the next pump, or do we just leave it alone until pickup?

Ask the supplier for a winter mix before the hard freezes land. Most rental outfits dose differently for cold weather, using antifreeze-style charge in the tank rather than the summer blue alone. Confirm they are doing that on your Friday service visit, and ask whether they can bump to twice a week while overnight lows stay in the teens. A fuller tank freezes faster than a recently pumped one.

Between visits, keep the door closed, clear snow away from the base so the tank is not sitting in a wind tunnel of ice, and do not dump hot water into the bowl as a DIY thaw. That can crack fittings. If a midweek freeze locks the tank before Friday, call them. Some will send an emergency pump; others will tell you to wait. Better to know which before the remodel stretches into December.
