Porta Potty Forum

Doing a drive through Christmas light display on our acreage this year. Do the volunteers and the cars in line need a porta potty?

My wife and I went big on lights this year and the church asked if they could run a drive through on our place as a fundraiser. Five weekends starting the Friday after Thanksgiving, 5:30 to 9:30 each night. Cars stay in a loop on our gravel lane and never park, but we'll have six to eight volunteers at the gate and the cocoa table every night.

Last year a few folks asked to use our house bathroom and I don't want strangers walking through the kitchen again.

Is one standard unit by the barn enough for the volunteers? If we let people in line use it too, does that turn it into a public setup where we need an accessible one? And it's pitch dark out there, so how do people light the inside of these at night without running a cord?

Yes, you need a portable toilet for the volunteers and should provide one for the public too. For six to eight volunteers, OSHA 1926.51 requires one toilet for 20 or fewer workers, so one standard unit meets the rule. Letting the public use it means you need to follow the ADA cluster rule: if you have one unit in a location, it must be ADA-compliant or you need to add one. For a four-hour event with cars moving, the guideline is about one unit per 50 to 75 people, but your traffic is steady, so add a second unit to handle the line without waits.

Place both units on level ground near the activity, not the house. For lighting, rent solar lights that mount on the unit door or get battery-powered LED lights from a rental company; no cord needed. Service weekly for volunteers only, but with public use, service twice a week or after each weekend to keep it clean. Cold weather means the rental company adds antifreeze to the tank.
