Porta Potty Forum

One of my laborers dropped his phone down the job site porta potty. Do we fish it out or wait for the pump truck?

Happened about an hour ago. One of the laborers bent down to grab a glove off the floor and his phone slid right out of his vest pocket and down the hole. It's still buzzing down there, you can hear it. We've got one standard unit on weekly service and the driver isn't due back until Tuesday.

The guys already want to go in after it with a rake and a trash bag taped over somebody's arm. I'd rather nobody do something dumb on my watch. Is it actually safe for us to reach in there with the chemical in the tank, or is that a hard no? Will the driver pull it out if I call the office, and is that usually an extra trip charge? And if it just sits in there until Tuesday, is the unit still fine to keep using?

Do not fish the phone out yourselves. The holding tank contains chemical deodorizer and waste, which pose a health risk. Call the rental company office immediately. They may dispatch the vacuum truck early for an extra trip, which typically incurs a charge due to the additional mileage and labor. Explain the situation clearly, they handle such requests regularly. The unit remains usable until Tuesday’s service, but warn your crew to avoid using it if possible to prevent further issues. The driver will retrieve the phone during pumping. For future safety, enforce a no-loose-items rule near the unit opening.
