2026: Best deodorizer for high-ammonia construction site waste?

Running a fleet in North Texas, I deal with construction sites that cook portable toilets in the sun and generate high-ammonia waste from worker diets and dehydration. The standard deodorizer we use, a formaldehyde-free blue liquid, works fine for most jobs but gets overwhelmed on these industrial sites after a few days. Even with weekly service visits, the ammonia smell punches through. We're talking 50 to 100 workers per site, units on level dirt, easy truck access, no alcohol. I've heard about enzyme-based breakers and stronger biocides, but I need something that won't get rejected at the wastewater plant. What's the most effective deodorizer or additive you've used for high-ammonia construction waste? Any tricks beyond just dumping more in the holding tank?

More pumping and more units will fix this faster than any stronger additive. Ammonia climbs when a tank sits full and hot for days, so the real goal is less waste per tank and fewer days between pumps.

I run crews of 60 plus in summer, and weekly service on a couple of units never held up for us. Check the unit count before blaming the chemical. OSHA 1926.51 Table D-1 calls for 1 seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers once a site passes 20, rounded up, so a 100 man crew needs 3 seats and 3 urinals. Every overloaded site I've worked on was short of that.

What helped on our jobs:

  • Put units in shade or turn the doors away from the afternoon sun. A cooler box smells less.
  • Wipe the urinal and floor every visit. A lot of the ammonia you smell is dried urine on surfaces, not the tank.
  • Bump the worst sites to two service visits a week.
  • Call the plant where your trucks dump and ask what they accept before you put anything new in the holding tank. They set the rules.

Enzyme products need time to work. In a hot tank pumped once a week, they lose that race.
