Why is there a separate 'fuel surcharge' on our October 2026 porta potty service invoice?

We have four standard units on a six-month construction site rental. The ground is level gravel, and the truck access is clear every Tuesday. Our original monthly rental quote covered delivery, pickup and weekly service. Now our October 2026 invoice has a separate line item for a 'fuel surcharge'. The rental company says it's because of recent fuel price increases, but the quote never mentioned this fee. What drives a fuel surcharge? Is it legal to add it after we signed the contract based on the original quote?

A fuel surcharge is the vendor passing its truck fuel cost through as its own line, and whether they can add it mid-rental comes down to what your signed agreement says, not the quote.

Pull the actual rental agreement, not the quote email. Ours had a line in the fine print saying rates and fees could be adjusted with notice, and the surcharge hung off that clause. If yours has nothing like that, you have real ground to push back.

What drives it is simple. Every service visit is a vacuum truck running a route, and when diesel climbs they either raise base rates or tack on a surcharge they can drop later.

What I did on a framing job last year:

  1. Asked for the clause in writing that allows it.
  2. Asked if it's a flat amount or tied to a fuel index, and when it comes off.
  3. Pointed out we gave them easy weekly access and asked them to waive it for the rest of the term.

They knocked it off for the remaining months. Worth one phone call before you just pay it.
