October 2026 wedding: Can porta potties go on a gravel driveway?

We're getting married in October 2026 at a private property with a gravel driveway that will double as guest parking. The venue has no indoor restrooms, so we need to rent portable toilets for about 120 guests over a 6-hour reception with dinner and an open bar. I'm looking at a mix of standard units and one ADA-compliant unit to meet accessibility needs. The gravel driveway is the only flat, open area near the tent, but I'm not sure if it's firm enough for the units to sit level without sinking, and whether a service truck can drive on it to pump them after the event. Has anyone placed porta potties on gravel before? Did the service truck have any issues with access or sinking?

Yes, you can place portable toilets on a gravel driveway. The gravel provides a firm, stable surface as long as it is well-compacted and free of large loose stones. Check that the gravel is level, because an unlevel unit can tip or be difficult to use.

Your plan for the wedding sounds solid. For 120 guests at a six-hour event with dinner and an open bar, the standard guideline of about one unit per 50 to 75 people is a starting point, but the alcohol and meal service mean you should add more units to prevent long lines. The ADA-compliant unit is required by the ADA 5 percent cluster rule when you have a cluster of units.

The service truck needs to drive on the gravel to pump the units after your event. A gravel driveway that supports guest cars will typically support a vacuum truck, but confirm with your rental company that the surface is suitable for their truck's weight. They will also need clear access on the service day, so ensure the driveway is not blocked by parked cars when the truck is scheduled to arrive.
